There’s really nothing more comforting than a cup of hot chocolate on a cold winter day, and the best part is, it’s so easy to whip up! The key to creating a great tasting cuppa is to use high quality cocoa powder and chocolate – you can really taste the difference. For this recipe, you can use Dutch processed or natural cocoa powder and we recommend splurging a little for the good stuff 😉
Here’s what you’ll need:
- 3 cups milk or milk alternative – use unsweetened varieties
- 3 Tbsp cocoa powder*
- 1/8 tsp salt
- 3 Tbsp sugar (adjust to taste)
- 6 oz semisweet chocolate, chopped
- 2 Tbsp cookie butter (adjust to taste)
- marshmallows, for garnish – optional
- speculaas cookies, for garnish – optional
Let’s get started!
Set milk in a medium saucepan over medium high heat, and bring to a simmer. Once ready, whisk in the cocoa powder, sugar, and salt. Then continue to simmer this mixture for 1 minute.
Reduce the heat to low, and whisk in the chocolate and cookie butter until fully incorporated. Remove from heat and set aside.
At this point, you can decide to serve the hot chocolate as is, or add a little extra something by rimming the serving glasses in speculaas. If you do decide to go this extra mile, start by processing the speculaas cookies in a food processor until it resembles a sand like texture. Then spread a layer of cookie butter around the rims of the serving glasses, and roll them in the cookie crumbs.
Pour the hot chocolate into glasses and top with marshmallows – toast them with a torch for some extra flavour. Serve immediately and bask in that warm chocolatey goodness 🙂
And there you have it folks – the perfect comfort drink to see you through the holidays. If you decide to whip up your own cup, show us your masterpiece by tagging us on instagram @demetres, and remember to check back next week for another delicious how-to.
