It’s a new month (and new year!), which means celebrating a few more members of our wonderful team here at Demetres. This time around, we’re shining the light on our Artisans Fay, Kevin & Richard. Read on to find out who’s crazy about bubbletea, who would like to sit down and chat with 50 Cent, and who’s visiting the Dominican in August.🌞🌴
She’s part of our Supervisor team in-store and sweet as a peach 🍑. Her upbeat, cheerful disposition belies the full plate that she’s balancing right now with school, work, and much much more. Her good vibes and altruistic nature makes us all feel a bit more hopeful for the future 🙂
Hi Fay, what do you like to do when you’re not at work?
Right now I’m at school – I’m in my fourth year at UofT but I’m taking another semester because I really want to figure out what I want to do and where I want to go afterwards. Other than that, I’m usually at the gym or just eating with friends. My top three cuisines are Mexican, Japanese and Italian. I love Mexican food – I’m the one who recommended King’s Tacos to Aruran actually.
What’s one thing you really want to do once you’re done with school?
Definitely travel. I did a pageant (read: beauty pageant 💅) this past October and they’re sending me to the Dominican in August to do an international pageant. So I definitely want to try that out and see where it takes me. It’s pretty fun, and I never thought I would enjoy doing it ’cause I’m pretty shy.
How did you get into doing beauty pageants?
It’s actually kind of random. I was at the Shoppers at Dufferin and Lawrence, and the director of the pageant I did came up to me and asked if I wanted to join. At first I thought it was a joke because I was there to pick up a prescription and I was wearing sweatpants and a hoodie with the hood on, so I don’t even know how he saw my face. He came up to me, peeked under the hood and handed me his card. I thought it was a scam so I didn’t really want to join, but he was really persistent and me and my mom ended up meeting him for lunch to talk about all the details. I’m kind of glad I did it.
You seem to have a lot on your plate right now – what do you do to relax when you’re feeling burnt out?
I definitely get burnt out, so I think it’s really important that you have alone time and don’t spread yourself too thin. Get an agenda and figure out what you need to do, but also make time for yourself. Honestly, just do little things to pamper yourself, like give yourself an at-home facial, binge watch Netflix and don’t feel guilty about it or feel like you’re wasting your time.
If you had one wish for anything in the world, what would it be?
That’s a hard one… I guess I would want more systems that implement ways to decrease our ecological footprint. I feel like the systems already out there are not as useful, or people just are not aware about them. I think we need to be more compassionate, not just to one another, but to other living things like plants and animals. The world is dying and I feel like everyone is just so desensitized to it. I was watching this video about a condo building in Scarborough where the superintendent implemented a recycling program where the chute that’s usually used for garbage was changed to a compost chute instead*. It’s little things like that that could really help people and help with changing their routines.

Next we’re saying hi to Kevin
With his eyebrows always on fleek, Kevin doesn’t play around when it comes to style. Not only does he exemplify effortless cool, this hospitality major has a big heart and is a pro when it comes to delivering top-notch service to our patrons.
Hi Kevin, what do you do when you’re not here at the restaurant?
I am always downtown [laughs]. I love to do food crawls so I’m always going around looking for new food. I love bubbletea! Everyone that works here knows that I love bubbletea. I’m not picky and I’m always open to try new things. I like Asian food, Middle-Eastern food, and I’m slowly getting to know Indian food, which I’ve never had before. I also watch movies and I shop a lot. I like to buy clothing and makeup. Oak + Fort and Urban Outfitters are my go-to stores – half my wardrobe is from Oak + Fort.
What’s one thing you really want to accomplish?
Well my life goal is that I always want my friends to be happy. I always try to put them before myself. I like to see them succeed, I don’t know but I guess I get second-hand happiness from them so that’s how I roll. So I wish for everyone I love and know to be happy. That’s my one goal.
What’s your favourite ice cream flavour?
That’s hard… I guess out of all the ice cream flavours, I would say mango. I like the ones you get at the end of all-you-can-eat sushi – it’s like our sorbetto with a hint more cream.
If you could have a meal with anyone (dead or alive), who would you choose?
There’s this person named Kang Daniel, one of the most popular Asian idols, and he’s my bias in this kpop group called Wanna One. He seems like a chill person, outgoing and friendly. Lowkey my deep down goal was to be an idol… I feel like that was everyone’s goal as a kid, to be famous. I would ask him about his path, how he trains, and get to know him more, to see how he is as a person.

Last but certainly not least, meet Richard
As a part of our Artisan team, Richard’s got a lot of drive and a huge amount of discipline. Who else can say that they hit the gym hard after a long night serving tables?
When you’re not working here, where do you find yourself most days?
I’m in the second year of a four year pre-law program called Law & Society. I love learning and I don’t really go out much. I go to the gym, I go get food, go watch a movie. If I have a little disposable cash, I’ll do some shopping. Working out takes up a big portion of my time, and my money goes towards food since I see it as self-investment.
Do you have any fitness goals you want to reach?
Yeah, I have a few. There’s this physique competition that I want to do, but before I do that I want to get to 215 lbs by April – about 20 lbs more. It’s doable if I can maintain a consistent diet and follow my meal plan. Before reaching that goal though, I need to figure out how to fit in working out with school because I have a handful of things to maintain and prioritize.
With your fitness goals, does your diet allow for ice cream?
Anytime. I’m trying to bulk up, and by far my favourite thing to eat here is the bread pudding. I get one every shift, with ice cream if I’m eating in and without ice cream if I’m taking out.
Aside from any educational or professional aspirations, what’s the one thing you would like to do in your life?
Travel. I like doing things with other people because then you have someone to communicate with, as opposed to just experiencing something by yourself. So for me I need to break past that, so I need to travel by myself and just experience it by myself. There a few places that I would like to visit: Egypt, Dubai, Fiji. I want to go to Iceland too.
If you can have a meal with anyone in the world, who would it be?
Probably someone I can learn a lot from, who has a lot more experience than me so they can teach me through their experiences. I would say Gary V. He started out working in his dad’s wine business, and after he grew that business successfully, he branched off into coaching and teaching people how to be better people and businessmen. I feel like he would be interesting to talk to. If not him, then maybe a famous rapper. I love rap, you know? Maybe 50 Cent or Nipsey Hussle because they’re both businessmen. 50 Cent has investments in a lot of different things. That’s what I like – being able to find what you’re talented in and then branching off into everything else.
