It’s the 11th hour and you’ve got a bunch of odd-shaped tchotchkes to wrap… don’t stress! Avoid shoving them down a fuzzy stocking because we’ve got an easy and fun solution that’ll delight any giftee. Modeled after one of our favourite dessert toppings, these strawberry surprise balls can conceal a surprisingly large number of items, and look cute while doing so.Β πŸ™ƒ

You will need:

Demetres' Strawberry Surprise Balls DIY Materials

  • Crepe paper streamers in varying colours (we want crepe paper, not tissue paper as they have a bit of stretch to them) – preferably some in red or pink
  • Scissors
  • Xacto blade
  • Green cardstock
  • Glue stick
  • Small stocking stuffers you want to gift!

Step 1:

Demetres' Strawberry Surprise Balls DIY Step 1

Take your crepe paper streamers and cut them in half width wise (the picture above shows a before at the bottom and three afters near the top). This is to help with wrapping them around the difficult nooks and crannies later.

Step 2:

Demetres' Strawberry Surprise Balls DIY Step 2

Take the largest item you want to wrap up, and start covering it with a strip of crepe paper. It’s totally ok if it doesn’t resemble a strawberry shape yet – that’s where all the other layers will come in.

Step 3:

Once the item is entirely covered, glue the end of the crepe paper onto the previous layers.

Step 4:

Demetres' Strawberry Surprise Balls DIY Step 4

Glue on the end of a second strip of crepe paper, and start wrapping the next item. Wherever you place the item is where it will bulk up the shape of the strawberry, so try to manoeuvre it where needed. For example, since the last item we wrapped was a small box shape, we are adding the second item onto one of the larger flat sides to build it out more.

Step 5:

Continue building the layers, with one item per layer, until you have wrapped the last of the stocking stuffers. Make sure to use a pink or red colour for your last layer so that it resembles a strawberry.

Then cut out a leafy top for the strawberry out of green cardstock with your xacto blade or a pair of scissors.

Step 6:

Curl the leafy ends of the strawberry top with the end of a pencil or your xacto knife, then glue it to the top of your strawberry. We also cut out small seeds for the strawberry out of yellow cardstock and glued them on.
