Forget the round plastic baubles this year and deck out your home in some dessert-themed holiday decor instead, starting with this ice cream sandwich ornament. Modelled after one of our popular desserts, this no-sew ornament can be whipped up in an afternoon, which makes it the perfect last minute craft 😉
You will need:
- Sheets of tan, brown and white felt
- Glue gun + glue sticks
Take a sheet of cardboard and cut out 2 circles measuring 9 cm (3 1/2″) in diameter. Then cut out 6 circles measuring 6.5 cm (2 1/2″) in diameter.
Cut out two circles of tan felt at about 15 cm across in diameter – this will be used to create the two cookies of the ice cream sandwich. Centre the 9 cm cardboard circles within the tan felt circles, then snip triangles around the edges to create spokes in the felt. Make sure to leave a bit of space between the cardboard edge & where you snip to.
Using the glue gun, fold the ‘spokes’ of the felt inwards and glue them in place. Start with one side, and work your way around until you have about 1/3 of the spokes left. Leave these unglued.
Tear off a small bit of fiberfill and insert this in-between the felt and cardboard. Then fold over the rest of the felt spokes and glue into place.
Cut out small bits of brown felt to resemble chocolate chips, then glue these in place on the felt cookie with the glue gun.
Next we’ll tackle the ice cream portion itself. First glue the 6 smaller cardboard circles that was cut earlier altogether using the glue gun. Then cut a long strip of white felt – as long as possible – with a width of 10 cm (4 inches). Then cut notches into either side of the white felt strip to create the same triangular spokes as the felt used to cover the cookie earlier. Make sure to leave a solid trip of 3 cm (just over 1″) in the middle.
Glue down one end of the white felt around the small cardboard circle stack, with one felt spoke glue down on either side.
Then start gluing down more of the white felt around the cardboard, all the while adding in a little fiberfill stuffing to round out the edges of the cardboard. This will give the ice cream portion a more rounded shape.
Continue sticking down the white felt until you’ve reached where the white felt began. Attach some ribbon or trim to form a loop to hang this ornament with the glue gun, then finish tacking down the white felt. If the length of felt you used isn’t long enough to go around the entire circumference, that’s ok! Just cut another strip of equal width (10 cm) and attach it to the previous strip with a bit of glue.
Now to complete the sandwich – squeeze some glue on to one side of the white felt ice cream portion and place one of the cookies on top.
Repeat the previous step on the other side to truly complete this felt ice cream cookie sandwich.
This would make a great gift for anyone who fancies ice cream (read: everyone) and appreciates a thoughtfully handcrafted gift this holiday season.
