‘Tis almost the season, and we’re getting into holiday gear here at Demetres HQ. There are traditions and motifs aplenty this time of year – from building gingerbread houses to singing carols – and we’re putting our own spin on a popular custom: the advent calendar.
Our DIY advent calendar is not for the faint of heart – it’ll take the better part of a day to make. It’s roomy though – perfect for packing in numerous chocolates, toys or small accessories – and makes the perfect gift for that dessert lover in your life (aka everyone).
You will need:
- Coloured cardstock
- Xacto blade
- Glue gun
- Our templates (1, 2, 3)
- Silhouette Cameo (optional – but it will cut down the craft time substantially)
Print out all of our templates on 8.5″ x 11″ coloured cardstock and cut them out. You’ll need 12 of the 8-inch cake slices (both icing and cake bottom), and 12 of the 11-inch cake slices.
If you have a Silhouette Cameo or Cricut, use their software to trace the outlines of the templates and cut them using the machine.
Score lightly along the fold lines with a ruler and xacto blade, then fold and glue all the paper cakes together. Cut out number 1 through 24 out of the cardstock for each day of the advent calendar, and glue them to ends of each cake slice (or alternatively use number stickers). We used numbers 1 – 12 for our top layer of cake, and numbers 13 – 24 for the bottom layer of cake.
Now for the fun bit – decorate each cake to your heart’s content! We attached mini pompoms with a glue gun to the top layer to give it some pizazz and then filled each day’s slice with treats or suggestions for daily holiday activities (i.e. bake gingerbread cookies).
Present it to a loved one and count down towards Christmas together 😊
